A paradigm shift in digital printing
Personalised printing offers customers more targeted communications that yield greater results

Digital printing has seen paradigm shift in the printing world; making the impossible, possible. Today’s commercial printing environment is more complex and competitive than ever before. Customers are increasingly demanding faster turnarounds, shorter run lengths, and personalised colour documents. The key to leveraging these trends is to develop new ways to work that translate into finding innovative ways to increase productivity and ROI. One of the most important advantages that digital printing offers is variable printing; which means that each printed document can have personalised/customised data. Another advantage of digital printing is the ability to offer a quick response time due to its minimal press setup and it’s built in multi-colour registration system. This eliminates many of the upfront, time consuming processes that can cause analog printing methods to have a slower turn-around time.

Personalised printing combines static or graphic information with dynamic database driven information, which can deliver a unique message to each of the customers. Businesses and marketers throughout the world acknowledge the trend that traditional mass marketing and sales strategies are straining to sustain growth and profitability. The most profitable companies are focusing on the customers’ individual needs to be responsive and to remain competitive.

Customised model in other words ‘Personalised printing’ opens up endless opportunities for One-To-One Marketing, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), direct mailer, sequential numbering, security identity solutions, ticketing, and billing - in fact any application that calls for different individual printed pieces. The key is that the printed content is controlled by data from a database or even by direct input from a web site. While a host of factors come into play in any One-to-One exercise, the most critical, perhaps, is the use of innovative technology.

The market is driving the desire for personalised digital printing and therefore pushing its development and adoption. Research has shown that when a person’s name is added to a printed page response rates go up by as much as 44%, when compared with a static document. When both a name and colour are employed, these response rates can increase by as much as 135%!

Personalised printing is becoming a necessary tool for the industry to be able to offer its customers more targeted communications that have been proven to yield greater results.

The digital trend is classified by Xerox as “New Business of Printing” which goes beyond the Xerox graphic arts product line to focus on communicating, creating and delivering value, and helping commercial printers make money. Going forward Xerox will be driving the “New Business of Printing” that will open up profitable avenues for graphic arts industry and provide them with the necessary tools to add value to their clients business and emerge as solutions partners.

Xerox believes that the digital printing industry has huge potential. The company is betting big on verticals like telecom, banking, insurance, retail, manufacturing and graphic communications. Currently, Xerox prints 70% of the telecom bills in the country and caters to 90% of the private sector banks in India, printing statements and personalised chequebooks. The new generation of Xerox digital presses, provide the right combination of high resolution colour image quality, fast processing and economical operation for profitable and affordable variable data printing (VDP) services. Xerox will continue to work towards expanding the market for digital printing by introducing the best products, software solutions and applications, and make investments in training and infrastructure development to maintain market leadership.

Ospel’s exit from UBS is good, if not necessary, as the bank gears to emerge out of the current crisis

We suspect even Ospel ‘Marc’ Marcel, outgoing Chairman of UBS, wouldn’t have known that ‘marcelling’ is actually a true blue English word meaning waves; in this case more a downwardly sickening trough as being experienced by UBS right now! UBS, once termed the most flamboyant ‘paramour’ of the US sub-prime market, seems to have been relegated now to the status of a scorned mistress, with its net losses reaching a killing $11.95 billion in the first quarter of 2008, subsequent to the total damage from the American sub-prime crash touching $37 billion.

Following a string of ousters of top-line executives like Jimmy, Chuck and Stan (even we thought the names seemed quite mafiosish), 57-year-old Marcel abjured his candidacy for re-election to the Board at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on April 23, 2008. Experts are supporting this move, blaming Marcel for all the ills that UBS suffers. But critically, one perhaps forgets that Marcel – who will be succeeded by Peter Kurer, (member of the General Counsel) – was the one who was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of UBS ever since he held the sceptre in 1998, when ubs was totally burdened by the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management and long-running legal battles. Marcel began his career with Swiss Bank Corporation (sbc) in 1977, and thereon moved to Merill Lynch in 1984 only to come back to SBC after three years. Once back, Marcel rose to immeasurable heights and became the ceo in 1995. When sbc and Union Bank of Switzerland merged in 1998 to form UBS, Marcel became the CEO of the newly formed entity and assumed the office of the Chairman of UBS in 2001, taking UBS to never before seen heights. But do all his achievements allow him clemency in the face of UBS currently facing serious losses and write-downs of approximately $19 billion on US real estate and related structured credit positions?

Clearly not; as his strategies were the ones that got them over exposed to Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities business, apart from of course the sub-prime imbroglio. Marcel, considered the most influential (and also aggressive and ambitious) banker in the whole of Europe, said, “I have always stated that I ultimately take responsibility for the bank’s situation.”

Though they might seem famous last words, the fact is that his concluding strategies well have the power to pull UBS out of the crisis. He’s already convinced the incoming Chairman Kurer to continue with his ‘integrated business model’ structure, which ensures diversified risk (and safety)! Further, he’s made UBS go for a rights issue of $14.93 billion, strengthening much depleted cash reserves. And as a parting shot, for risk management, Marcel has already formed separate entities for most of UBS’s assets related to US residential real estate market! Could he make a re-entry into UBS in the near future? Hmm, not if we go by what his shareholders actually want. From the time the news of Marcel’s exit hit the market on March 31, 2008, the shares of ubs have wonderfully spiralled up from $28.80 to $33.34 (as on April 14, 2008) marking an increase of 13.61%. Marcel, the answer’s blowing in the wind, and it’s a downward trough...

When Hugo Chavez offered aid of heating oil to residents of chilly Alaskan state, it was a big blow to US. First it showed how hollow the policies of American government towards its citizens and most importantly it showed how powerful and influential Hugo Chavez is becoming. Venezuela is 1/12th the size of US and has GDP less than 2% of US. But Chavez has not hesitated to belittle Uncle Sam whenever he got the opportunity. Of course, that haughty courage is backed by the knowledge that Venezuela’s oil reserves give it tremendous bargaining power. His steadfast will to reduce American power and influence is perhaps one reason that brings him closer to the latter’s newfound ally India. On a recent visit to New Delhi, he expressed in no uncertain terms to the media how Venezuela wished to play a role in India’s energy sector as well as other key areas. Of course, India wouldn’t mind at all!

The person who has completely changed the way Indian diplomats used to work is in no mood to leave any stone unturned. His aim – to ensure the success of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in the year 2010. As the Secretary General, Commonwealth Games, Kamlesh Sharma has now a point to prove – the trust shown by the leaders of 53 countries and he definitely will.

“I will do so with confidence and enthusiasm,” says Sharma. And, no doubt, he can turn out to be a strong force in order to make upcoming Commonwealth Games a success and prove those wrong, who were earlier quacking doubts on India’s potential to organise Commonwealth Games. “It is an honour and privilege to serve this great institution,” adds Sharma. The efforts of Chief Minister Sheila Dixit to transform Delhi into Paris with luxurious residential complexes, wide & clean roads, Metro and glittering shopping malls is based on one single dream – to make Commonwealth Games a success and if this dream comes true, Kamlesh Sharma will deserve quite a few accolades.

Today it is of paradigm importance that this rural-urban divide is bridged and that every poor Indian is given the support system to come out of the threshold of poverty not through doling out of money, but through education and health. Yet 60 years after independence and nearly one and a half decade after embracing the economic reforms, caste and religion still remain primary parameters to determine as to who should get support and who should not. This budget continues with the same legacy starting from announcement of opening of 256 branches of public sector banks till December 2007 with pledge of opening 288 more by March end, to the pledge of induction of more minorities in central para-military forces (if the FM meant all minorities including Sikhs, then they already constitute a significant proportion of para-militray forces by tradition), to multi-sectoral development for 90 minority concentration districts, to modernisation of madrassa education. This in addition to thousands of crores being allocated for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Nothing wrong with any of these if one were to mention deprived Indians instead of classifying under SC, ST & minority.

In very few countries the annual ritual of budget creates as much interest as it happens in India because it is assumed that through the budget the government would put forward its vision towards charting a new paradigm. Yet over the years the budget has become more of an appeasement statement than a vision statement. India is crying for a plethora of structural reforms without which its growth story would soon become an illusion. Yet all that the government does is to merely acknowledge it but no one dares to bell the cat. The food subsidy bill is rising even when millions below poverty line continue to remain malnourished and foodgrains in FCI godowns keep rotting for months. The subsidy on LPG cylinders continue to benefit the rich more than the poor and yet no one want to bell the cat. The entire estimate of reducing fiscal deficit is based on the estimate of growth of Indian economy and more tax being paid by India Inc. but nothing in essence is done to help the performers.

Shocking when entrepreneurship is becoming the real catalyst in changing the economy, no directive is being issued to the banks to ease the lending norms for budding entrepreneurs. Rs.60000 crore can be waived for agriculture but for a new entrepreneur to get even Rs.60000 from the banks remain an uphill task. True, quite a few scholarships have been announced to encourage science education but so long as a scientist in government institution continue to get a comparable to that of a team leader in a call center, people would prefer to join the call center than to take the effort of becoming a scientist.

Coming back to where it all began. In the streets of Paris & Helsinki the type of cleanliness one finds, one can find the same in India in private places but not in public places. So, they can afford to write, ‘Say No to Capitalism’. But in our country where public institution remain subservient to the whims of the government, less of government makes better of it. Truly said perhaps that India is doing well in software because there was no Ministry of software. The same could have perhaps been true for agriculture too. If waiving of loan could have solved the problem of poverty & agriculture then by now India would have been the richest country of the world. Next time, how about continuing with the same policy and giving a crore each to every Indian? That might fetch more votes in an election year but would it make India rich? Well if wishes were horses, surely it would have… but would not simply because populism is not socialism.

The day he met ad guru Piyush Pandey is the most memorable of his life. And the trick he played to meet the creative genius could straight be out of a Bollywood flick. He sent a fake bomb along with his resume to Sagar (Mahabaleshwarkar) who was the Creative Director, O&M (at the time). Everyone in O&M panicked and just as they were about to vacate the Ogilvy building, they realised that it was just a fake alarm clock with some agarbattis. Piyush actually congratulated Reilly for the superb idea. For a guy who wants to be a National Creative Director someday, advertising was not something he had carefully thought about. With a B.Sc. in Geology from St. Xavier’s College, he was all set to explore the earth & other planets. But, inspired by a friend who’d raved about his job profile in an ad agency to him, he found the creative field more interesting, than a job in Geology. Having spent the last seven years in various advertising agencies, he has worked on campaigns for Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund, Birla Sun Life Insurance, Aditya Birla Corporate, Express Group (Indian Express, Financial Express, Screen), BBC World, Travelocity.co.in and ICL, among others.

What makes the business model of SpiceJet so unique? And does this prove that the LCCs could be headed skywards once more? Binit Somaia, Regional Director, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, feels that SpiceJet is, firstly, benefitted by presence of some high profile investors. Furthermore, he opines, “SpiceJet has been a solid & steady performer, sticking to the classic low cost model, pursuing a conservative growth strategy and ensuring that its core systems are in place.” This is in sharp contrast to the pioneer Air Deccan, which proliferated into the Indian market like wildfire with route expansions & with newer & newer pricing innovations, before it realised it had bitten much more than it could actually chew!

However, SpiceJet will have to ensure it is able to sustain this turnaround by keeping its operational costs to the bare minimum. And while it may be too early to signal a revival of LCCs in India, there is at least that sliver of hope for these fallen superheroes!
